Quick answer

To pass DELE C1 you need 60 of 100 points overall and at least 30 of 50 in each of its two test groups, across four tests that include two integrated-skills tests. For C1 we recommend private one-to-one preparation: 60 private hours cost €1,500 from our packs, and our 60-hour Semester course costs €810.

What does the DELE C1 exam actually test?

DELE C1 is the fifth of the six official Spanish diplomas issued by Spain’s Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports and managed worldwide by the Instituto Cervantes. The Common European Framework calls it effective proficiency: fluent, precise Spanish for academic and professional settings, including long, demanding texts and spontaneous speech.

Where DELE A1 to B2 are built around four separate skill tests, C1 changes shape. Two of its four tests are “destrezas integradas”, integrated skills, which combine two abilities in one task:

Test What it checks Duration
Prueba 1: Comprensión de lectura y uso de la lengua (reading and use of language) Understanding long, complex texts and using grammar and vocabulary with precision 90 minutes
Prueba 2: Comprensión auditiva y uso de la lengua (listening and use of language) Understanding extended spoken texts, lectures and conversations, plus language in context 50 minutes
Prueba 3: Destrezas integradas, comprensión auditiva y expresión e interacción escritas (listening into writing) Turning what you hear into a connected, well-organised written text 80 minutes
Prueba 4: Destrezas integradas, comprensión de lectura y expresión e interacción orales (reading into speaking) Reading a text, then discussing, arguing and reacting to it live with an examiner 20 minutes, plus 20 minutes of preparation

The three written tests (reading, listening, and the listening-into-writing test) add up to 220 minutes, 3 hours and 40 minutes, sat on the same day. The oral test is in person with an examiner, either later that day or on a different day set by your centre, after 20 minutes to prepare your answer to the reading-into-speaking task. There is no separate, isolated “speaking test” at C1: your spoken Spanish is marked while you react to something you just read, which is a different skill from simply answering set questions.

How is DELE C1 scored, and what counts as a pass?

Each of the four tests is worth a maximum of 25 points, for 100 points in total, but the pass rule groups them differently from how they are taught:

  • Group 1 (50 points): Prueba 1 (reading) plus Prueba 3 (listening into writing)
  • Group 2 (50 points): Prueba 2 (listening) plus Prueba 4 (reading into speaking)

To receive the diploma you need at least 60 points out of 100 overall, and at least 30 points out of 50 in each group, in the same exam session. The pairing is deliberate: Group 1 rewards careful reading and clear written construction, Group 2 rewards listening comprehension and live spoken reaction, so you cannot lean on one strong skill to cover for a weak one in the other group. The final grade is Apto (pass) or No apto (fail); the diploma itself carries no numeric score. If you want a score instead, that is what SIELE gives you: see our comparison, DELE or SIELE: which one is right for you?

When can you sit DELE C1 in Málaga in 2027?

Registration for the 2027 DELE sessions opens on 18 November 2026. The Instituto Cervantes calendar runs several sessions a year, but the Centro Internacional de Español at the University of Málaga (UMA), an exam centre accredited by the Instituto Cervantes, offers C1 at only two of its 2027 sittings; its February, April and October sessions are A2 only:

Exam date Levels at the Málaga centre Registration opens Registration closes
Saturday 22 May 2027 B1, B2, C1, C2 18 November 2026 7 April 2027
Saturday 13 November 2027 B1, B2, C1, C2 18 November 2026 29 September 2027

If neither date works for you, other exam centres may offer C1 on other dates, each with its own deadline; check the official calendar for the centre you will actually sit at. On fees, the UMA centre’s 2027 page lists €225 for C1, flagged as pending confirmation by the Instituto Cervantes, so treat it as a guide rather than a locked price until the centre confirms it. The exam fee is always paid directly when you register, separately from any preparation course.

Why do we recommend private classes for DELE C1?

Our own DELE or SIELE comparison page is explicit about this: private, one-to-one exam preparation is what we recommend for C1 and C2. The reasons follow from how the level and the exam work.

First, the C1 content itself stops being uniform. At A1 to B1 the gaps candidates close are broadly similar: basic grammar, everyday vocabulary, simple narration. At C1 our own course plan widens to “literature, science, technology and advanced culture”, with functions such as building arguments, writing academic reports and taking part in specialised debates. Two C1 candidates can have very different real gaps, one fluent in conversation but shaky writing a structured argument, another the opposite. A class built around one shared syllabus serves the common gaps well; a private class spends the whole hour on your actual weak spot instead.

Second, the exam itself has moved to integrated skills. Prueba 3 and Prueba 4 test whether you can turn what you hear into writing, or turn what you read into live spoken argument, under time pressure. The bottleneck can sit at a different point in that chain for each candidate, so a lesson plan shared by several people cannot fix every one of them at once. A teacher working one-to-one can watch exactly where you lose the thread and fix that specific step.

Third, the oral test at C1 is a live, one-to-one conversation with an examiner reacting to a text you just read. Rehearsing that one-to-one, with a teacher playing the examiner in real time, matches the exam condition more closely than rehearsing it with several students taking turns.

We should be honest about the trade-off too: private hours cost more per hour, and for B1 or B2 our structured DELE/SIELE course remains a sound, cheaper route (see our DELE B1 guide for that plan). For C1, we think the extra cost buys something specific: every hour planned around your own gap. If budget decides it for you, the Semester course below is still a legitimate way to prepare, with the same diagnostic test, materials and official models.

What does a realistic 60-hour DELE C1 plan look like?

Sixty hours is a workable block for a candidate who already tests close to C1 and needs to turn that level into exam technique. We offer two ways to reach it:

Option Format Hours Price
A: Semester course DELE/SIELE Semester course 60 hours across the semester €810
B: Private hours 50-hour pack + 10-hour pack 60 hours, one-to-one €1,200 + €300 = €1,500

Option A is the cheaper route per hour: the 60-hour Semester course described on our DELE/SIELE exam preparation page costs €810 and is spread across the semester rather than concentrated. Option B is private one-to-one hours, built from our standard one-to-one lesson packs: a 50-hour pack at €24 an hour (€1,200) plus a 10-hour pack at €30 an hour (€300), for 60 hours at €1,500.

The comparison: Option B costs €690 more for the same 60 hours (€1,500 against €810), and it buys what the previous section argues for: you and your teacher decide where every hour goes and when it happens. Both options include a diagnostic test and the same official Instituto Cervantes exam models. Full prices, including shorter packs, are on our Málaga prices page.

With Option B, we would not spread the hours evenly across the four tests. One way we would split them, if your diagnostic shows two weaker tests:

Hours Focus
1 to 5 A first timed mock exam and its review, to confirm your weakest tests
6 to 33 Your two weakest tests: timed tasks, feedback and rewrites (28 hours)
34 to 47 Your two stronger tests, so neither group drops below 30 points (14 hours)
48 to 60 Two more timed mock exams and a final review (13 hours)

Are you actually ready for C1? An honest check before you book

Before committing to 60 hours of C1-specific preparation, it is worth checking whether C1 is actually your starting point. On our own private one-to-one course page, the academic progression table that takes a complete beginner to C1 adds up to:

  • A1: 80 class hours
  • A2: 80 class hours
  • B1: 120 class hours
  • B2: 120 class hours
  • C1: 120 class hours

That is 520 class hours of private lessons, plus roughly 260 hours of guided independent study, about 52 weeks at 10 private hours a week. The page notes that a heavier weekly load gets you there faster; if you want a full-time timetable, our Super Intensive course combines 20 group hours with 5 private hours a week. If you are starting from B1 or early B2, 60 hours of exam practice will not close that gap and teach exam technique at once. The better plan is to build the level first, confirm you have arrived with the free Málaga level test, and only then book the block above.

This 60-hour plan is for a different reader: someone who already tests at C1, or has just finished the C1 section of a course, and now needs exam technique and practice with the integrated-skills tasks, not more grammar.

What is included in DELE C1 preparation, and what is not?

Across both the Semester course and private hours, preparation includes:

  • A diagnostic test at the start, to find your real level and your weakest test
  • Our own materials: worksheets, tasks, rubrics and mock exams for all four tests
  • Specialised editorial materials that we buy for the course
  • Official Instituto Cervantes exam models, so you practise on the real integrated-skills task formats
  • Help with your exam registration, step by step, at no extra charge

What is not included: the exam fee itself. Vamos Academy is not an official examination centre, so we prepare you and help you register, but you sit the exam at an accredited centre such as the University of Málaga, and you pay the exam fee when you register there.

How do you register for the DELE C1 exam?

Registration always goes through the Instituto Cervantes system and your exam centre, never through us, and the steps are the same whichever session you choose:

  1. Choose the exam session and the C1 level
  2. Select your examination centre (for Málaga, the Centro Internacional de Español at UMA)
  3. Create your account on examenes.cervantes.es
  4. Fill in the registration form
  5. Pay the exam fee online
  6. Save your payment receipt: you will need it on exam day, with a valid ID card or passport

We help with every one of those steps once you book a course or private hours with us, at no extra charge.

Frequently asked questions

How many points do you need to pass DELE C1?

You need at least 60 points out of 100 overall, and at least 30 out of 50 in each of the two test groups: Group 1 (reading plus the listening-into-writing test) and Group 2 (listening plus the reading-into-speaking test). Missing either group’s threshold means No apto even if your overall total reaches 60.

What makes DELE C1 different from DELE B1 or B2?

At C1 two of the four tests become “destrezas integradas”, integrated skills: one combines listening with writing, the other combines reading with live spoken interaction. B1 and B2 test the four skills more separately. C1 also expects academic and professional register, not just everyday Spanish.

What are the DELE C1 exam dates for 2027 in Málaga?

The University of Málaga centre offers C1 twice in 2027: Saturday 22 May and Saturday 13 November, alongside B1, B2 and C2. Registration for both opens on 18 November 2026 and closes on 7 April 2027 for May and 29 September 2027 for November.

How much does the DELE C1 exam cost?

The University of Málaga centre lists €225 for C1 in 2027, still pending confirmation by the Instituto Cervantes. Fees differ by country and centre, so confirm the figure for your centre before you pay.

Are private classes worth it for DELE C1?

We recommend them for C1 and C2 because the exam tests integrated skills and a live oral conversation, and because individual gaps at C1 can differ widely between candidates. Our 60-hour Semester course includes the same diagnostic test, materials and official models for €810. Private hours cost more (€1,500 for 60 from our packs) but let you decide where each hour goes.

How long does it take to prepare for DELE C1?

It depends on your starting level. If you already test at or near C1, 60 hours of focused preparation is realistic. Reaching C1 from zero takes about 520 class hours in our private course plan, roughly 52 weeks at 10 hours a week, before exam-specific preparation makes sense.

Can you retake DELE C1 if you fail?

Yes. There is no limit on attempts, but you register and pay again for the next available session, and a pass in one test group does not carry over to a later sitting; the whole exam is graded as one attempt.

Is DELE C1 enough for university or work in Spain?

DELE C1 certifies effective, near-fluent use of Spanish in academic and professional contexts, which fits requirements that ask for an advanced level, but check the exact level each university or employer names. For Spanish nationality the language requirement is DELE A2 or higher plus the separate CCSE test, so C1 covers the language part but not the CCSE; see DELE A2 and CCSE for Spanish citizenship.

Do private lessons for DELE C1 use the same pricing as regular private classes?

Yes. Private DELE C1 preparation is billed on the same one-to-one packs as our general private lessons, from €35 for a single hour down to €24 an hour on a 50-hour pack, and the plan is built around your diagnostic result, your weakest test and your exam date.

Ready to build your 60 hours?

Sixty hours sounds abstract until you decide where they go: a Semester course with its own structure and pace, or private hours aimed at the two tests that are costing you points. Confirm your level, pick the 22 May or 13 November 2027 sitting, and choose the option that matches your budget and your gap.
