Effective DELE B2 preparation comes down to three things: knowing the exact format of the four exam papers, training each task type under real time limits, and building a study routine you can sustain for 10-14 weeks. Most candidates who fail don’t fail on Spanish. They fail on exam technique, usually in the writing and speaking papers. This guide gives you the full exam breakdown, a realistic 12-week plan, and the section-by-section tactics our teachers use with exam candidates at Vamos Academy, which runs a DELE and SIELE exam preparation centre in Málaga alongside its schools in Málaga and Buenos Aires.

What Is the DELE B2 and Why Does It Matter?
The DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is the official Spanish proficiency certificate issued by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education. B2 is the level most institutions actually ask for: it’s the level many Spanish universities ask of international applicants, and it’s the level employers read as “works comfortably in Spanish.”
The diploma never expires. Once you pass B2, it’s yours for life, which is one reason it’s worth doing properly rather than gambling on a lower level now and re-examining later.
At B2 you’re expected to argue a position, follow native-speed conversation on abstract topics, and write structured formal texts. It’s a real step up from B1, where the exam mostly tests survival Spanish.
How Is the DELE B2 Exam Structured?
The exam has four papers (pruebas), grouped into two scoring blocks. This grouping matters more than almost anything else in your preparation, more on that below.
| Paper | What it tests | Time | Tasks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prueba 1: Comprensión de lectura | Reading | 70 min | 4 tasks, 36 items |
| Prueba 2: Comprensión auditiva | Listening | 40 min | 5 tasks, 30 items |
| Prueba 3: Expresión e interacción escritas | Writing | 80 min | 2 texts of 150-180 words |
| Prueba 4: Expresión e interacción orales | Speaking | 20 min (+ 20 min preparation) | 3 tasks |
Scoring works in two groups. Group 1 combines reading and writing; Group 2 combines listening and speaking. Each group is worth 50 points, and you need at least 30 points in each group to pass. There is no overall compensation between groups: a brilliant 48/50 in reading and writing does nothing for you if listening and speaking come in at 29.
The practical consequence: you cannot afford one weak skill. A strong reader who neglects speaking practice is the classic DELE B2 failure profile.
How Long Does It Take to Prepare for DELE B2?
It depends entirely on where you start. As a working guideline our teachers use:
- Solid B2 already, just need the certificate: 4-6 weeks of exam-technique training is usually enough.
- Strong B1 / borderline B2: plan 10-14 weeks combining language work with exam practice. Most estimates put the jump from B1 to B2 at roughly 180-250 guided study hours.
- Mid-B1 or below: build the level first. Sitting B2 more than two levels above your real ability wastes the exam fee, book a later convocatoria instead.
How do you know where you stand? Do a full past paper cold, under exam timing, before you plan anything. Instituto Cervantes publishes free past exams on its website. Your score on that diagnostic, especially per group, tells you what the next three months should look like.
What Does a Realistic 12-Week DELE B2 Study Plan Look Like?
This is the structure we use for candidates starting from a strong B1, assuming 8-10 hours of study a week. Compress or stretch it to match your timeline.
Weeks 1-2: Diagnostic and format familiarity
- Sit one complete past paper under real conditions. Score it per group, not just overall.
- Study the format of every task until nothing on exam day will be a surprise: how instructions are worded, how answer sheets work, what each writing and speaking task demands.
- Start a personal error log. Every mistake you make from now on goes in it, with a corrected version.
Weeks 3-6: Skill building
- Daily Spanish input: 30 minutes of listening (podcasts, radio, series) and 30 minutes of reading (press articles, opinion columns. The register the exam uses).
- Grammar consolidation focused on B2 pain points: the subjunctive in all its uses, past-tense contrast, connectors, conditional structures. If the subjunctive still feels like guesswork, work through our full guide to the Spanish subjunctive and the preterite vs. imperfect guide before drilling exam tasks.
- Write two exam-format texts per week and get them corrected by a teacher or a competent native speaker. Uncorrected writing practice reinforces your errors.
Weeks 7-10: Exam tasks under time pressure
- Switch from open practice to timed task drills: one full reading or listening paper per week, plus weekly writing and speaking under exam conditions.
- Record your speaking monologues on your phone and listen back. It’s uncomfortable and it works.
- Review your error log weekly. Errors that keep appearing get their own targeted drills.
Weeks 11-12: Full simulations and tapering
- Two complete mock exams, timed, in one sitting each: the written papers run over three hours and stamina is part of the test.
- No new material in the final week. Review your error log, your connector lists, and your writing templates. Sleep.
Preparing for the DELE on your own is possible, but corrected writing and real speaking practice are the two things self-study can’t give you.

How Do You Prepare for Each Section of the DELE B2?
Reading: it’s a time exam, not a vocabulary exam
Seventy minutes for four tasks and 36 items is tight. Task 4 (the cloze-style grammar text) punishes candidates who linger too long on tasks 1-3. Train with a per-task time budget: roughly 15 minutes each for tasks 1-3, leaving 20 minutes for task 4 and transferring answers. Read opinion pieces from the Spanish press daily; the exam’s texts are journalistic, not literary.
Listening: train the accents, not just the speed
The audios include peninsular and Latin American accents, played twice. If all your input has been one accent, diversify now, series and films are the pleasant way to do it, and our list of the best Spanish films for learners is a good starting point. In the exam, read the questions during the instruction audio: knowing what you’re listening for is half the task.
Writing: templates and connectors win points
You produce two texts of 150-180 words in 80 minutes: typically a formal letter or email responding to an audio or written prompt, then a choice between two options such as an opinion article or a review. Examiners score structure and register heavily. Build a skeleton for each text type (greeting, purpose, two developed points, closing formula), and internalise a bank of discourse connectors. Our Spanish connectors list covers the ones that make an examiner nod: no obstante, por consiguiente, en cuanto a, si bien.
Respect the word count. Writing 250 words is not extra credit; it’s more surface area for errors and a signal you can’t edit yourself.
Speaking: the 20 minutes of preparation decide everything
You get 20 minutes before the interview to prepare tasks 1 and 2 (an argued monologue on a proposal’s pros and cons, and a photo-based situation). Use them to write a bullet skeleton, never a script, examiners can hear recitation and mark it down. Task 3 (commenting on survey data) is unprepared, so practise describing percentages and comparisons out loud: “la mayoría de los encuestados”, “casi un tercio”, “frente al año anterior”. In our experience, candidates who rehearse with a stranger, not their teacher, adapt far better to the real interview.

Which Mistakes Make Candidates Fail the DELE B2?
- Ignoring the group scoring rule. Balanced 32/32 passes; brilliant-but-lopsided 45/28 fails. Allocate study time to your weakest group, not your favourite skill.
- Practising without a clock. The reading paper feels easy at home and brutal at 70 minutes. Every practice from week 7 should be timed.
- Uncorrected writing. Ten corrected essays beat forty uncorrected ones.
- Scripting the monologue. Memorised openings collapse the moment the examiner interrupts with a question.
- Booking the wrong level. If your diagnostic score is under 50%, B2 in eight weeks is a donation to Instituto Cervantes. Take the later session.
When and Where Can You Take the DELE B2 in 2026?
Instituto Cervantes runs several convocatorias a year, but not every session includes every level and not every centre offers every date. Confirmed 2026 sessions that include B2:
| Exam date (2026) | Registration deadline |
|---|---|
| 23 May | 8 April |
| 16 October | 2 September |
| 14 November | 30 September |
Unlike some previous years, the official 2026 calendar has no July session, and the February and April 2026 sessions are A2-only, so between May and October there is no chance to sit B2. Always confirm that your specific centre runs your chosen date at examenes.cervantes.es.
Registration closes well before the exam, often six to eight weeks, so lock in your date at the start of your study plan, not the end. The fee varies by country and exam centre: as a reference, the 2026 B2 fee is €204 in Spain and €235 in Germany. Check the official price list for your country on examenes.cervantes.es.
Málaga and Buenos Aires, the two cities where Vamos Academy has schools, both host DELE examination sessions, so it is usually possible to prepare and sit the exam in the same city. Confirm the current list of examination centres and dates for your convocatoria at examenes.cervantes.es. Results are typically published around two to three months after the exam.
Frequently Asked Questions About DELE B2 Preparation
How many hours do I need to prepare for DELE B2?
From a strong B1, plan roughly 180-250 study hours, about 10-14 weeks at 8-10 hours per week. If you’re already at B2 level, 4-6 weeks of focused exam technique is usually enough.
What score do you need to pass the DELE B2?
At least 30 out of 50 points in each of the two groups: Group 1 (reading + writing) and Group 2 (listening + speaking). Both groups must pass independently, a high score in one cannot compensate for a fail in the other.
Is the DELE B2 hard to pass?
It’s demanding but predictable. The format never changes, so candidates who train with past papers under timed conditions pass at much higher rates. Most failures come from weak exam technique in writing and speaking, not from insufficient Spanish.
Can I prepare for the DELE B2 on my own?
Partially. Reading, listening and grammar respond well to self-study with past papers. Writing and speaking don’t: you need someone qualified to correct your texts and simulate the interview. Many candidates self-study the receptive skills and take classes for the productive ones.
Does the DELE B2 certificate expire?
No. DELE diplomas are valid indefinitely, which makes B2 a one-time investment for university admission, employment, or residency paperwork that other certificates with expiry dates can’t match.
When are the DELE B2 exams in 2026?
Confirmed 2026 sessions including B2 fall on 23 May, 16 October and 14 November, each with a registration deadline several weeks earlier. Check availability at your specific exam centre, as not all centres run every session.
Twelve weeks is enough, if every one of them counts. Vamos Academy runs a DELE and SIELE exam preparation centre in Málaga and small-group Spanish courses in Málaga and Buenos Aires, with group courses from €200 per week and private classes from €30 per hour.
