DELE B2 or C1 for University and Jobs in Spain?

Quick answer

Whether you need DELE B2 or C1 for Spain depends on the programme or the role, not one blanket rule. The University of Málaga's MBA and Spain's nursing homologation both ask for B2, while roles built on precise writing, negotiation or academic Spanish are better served by C1. Always confirm the exact level with the institution or employer before you book a course.

What is the real difference between DELE B2 and DELE C1?

On paper the gap is one CEFR step. In the exam room it is bigger than that. DELE B2, Vantage level, certifies that you interact fluently with native speakers, understand the main ideas of complex texts and defend a point of view. DELE C1, Effective Operational Proficiency, certifies that you use the language flexibly in academic and professional settings, understand long and demanding texts, and select the right register for each reader. That last phrase, choosing the right register, is the practical difference: B2 Spanish gets your point across; C1 Spanish gets it across in the way a native professional would say it.

The exam format reflects that jump:

Test DELE B2 DELE C1
Reading 70 minutes, separate test Part of an integrated test with grammar and vocabulary, 90 minutes
Listening 40 minutes, separate test Part of an integrated test with grammar and vocabulary, 50 minutes
Writing 80 minutes, separate test Integrated with listening: you turn what you hear into a written text, 80 minutes
Speaking 20 minutes plus 20 minutes preparation, separate test Integrated with reading: you read a text, then argue and react to it live, 20 minutes plus 20 minutes preparation

Both exams use the same pass rule: 60 of 100 points overall, and at least 30 of 50 points in each of two groups, or you fail regardless of your total. At B2 the groups are reading with writing, and listening with speaking, the same pairing as B1. At C1 the groups change shape because two tests are now integrated: reading plus the listening-into-writing test in one group, listening plus the reading-into-speaking test in the other. In practice Group 1 rewards careful reading and clear written construction, Group 2 rewards listening and live spoken reaction, so one strong test cannot carry a weak one in the other group.

What Spanish level do Spanish universities actually require?

We know of no single national rule that fixes one CEFR level for every Spanish university and every kind of admission, so we will not invent one. Each university, and often each programme, sets its own requirement. A concrete example: the University of Málaga’s MBA master’s programme states, in its own admission criteria, that applicants from non-Spanish-speaking countries need an advanced level of Spanish, B2, and accepts either a DELE diploma or a SIELE certificate, both issued by the Instituto Cervantes, as proof.

That B2 bar is specific to applicants entering a full master’s programme from a foreign qualification, and it is not the same question as the Spanish level a university recommends for an exchange semester. If you are coming to Málaga as an Erasmus student rather than applying to a full degree, our guide to the Spanish level UMA actually asks for explains why that case is usually B1, a recommendation rather than an entry requirement. For a full bachelor’s or master’s application with a foreign qualification, the honest approach is to check the exact wording on the specific programme’s own admission page, since one faculty’s criteria do not bind another’s.

What level does a regulated profession like nursing actually require?

University admission is one trigger for a Spanish level requirement. Practising a regulated profession in Spain with a foreign qualification is another, and it runs on its own legal track. The Ministry’s own page for nursing (enfermero/a) homologation states the language condition directly: “Competencia lingüística en español (nivel B2), si no es nacional de un estado entre cuyas lenguas oficiales se encuentre el castellano”, Spanish language competence at level B2, unless you are a national of a state where Spanish is an official language. The same page lists further exceptions, for example if most of your studies were taught in Spanish, and it does not name a specific certificate.

That is one profession, chosen because it is a clear, documented case, not a claim that every regulated profession in Spain sets the same bar. Other professions have their own homologation pages and requirements, which we have not checked one by one. If a regulated profession is your reason for learning Spanish, check your own profession’s homologation page before you choose B2 or C1 preparation, since the level that actually gates your paperwork may not be the one you assumed.

B2 or C1: which one do employers actually want?

Here we can only reason with you, not hand you a rule, because no public list fixes a Spanish level by job title and we are not going to invent one. What we can say, from how the two levels are actually defined, is where each one tends to fit. B2 is the level at which you can hold your own in a meeting, write a normal work email and follow a conversation among native speakers at a natural pace; it is often workable for customer-facing, administrative and general office roles where Spanish is a working tool rather than the product.

C1 adds precision at the edges: arguing a position in writing, picking up on a nuance in a negotiation, adapting your register between a client email and an internal report. Roles that are built around that kind of precise, high-stakes communication, legal, academic, senior client-facing or anything where misreading a nuance is costly, are where C1 earns its extra hours, even when the job advert simply says “fluent Spanish”.

The only reliable move is to read the actual job description or ask the employer directly which level they mean, since “fluent” and “advanced” are used loosely and inconsistently across job postings. If the role is also a regulated profession, as above, the legal homologation requirement and the employer’s own preference can differ, and the legal one is the one you cannot skip.

How many hours does it take to go from B2 to C1 in our course plan?

Once you know which level you are aiming at, the next honest question is how far you actually are from it. In our course plan, each level from B1 upward is 120 hours of group class, split into three two-week sections:

Level Class hours Sections Weeks at Intensive (20 h/wk) Weeks at 10 private hours/wk
B1 120 h 3 × 2 weeks 6 weeks 12 weeks
B2 120 h 3 × 2 weeks 6 weeks 12 weeks
C1 120 h 3 × 2 weeks 6 weeks 12 weeks

So finishing B2 and then finishing C1 is another 120 hours of class, the same block of hours as the level you just completed, not a shorter top-up. For context, reaching a finished B2 from a complete beginner start takes 400 hours of class in our plan (A1 80, A2 80, B1 120, B2 120), so C1 adds roughly another third on top of that journey. If a finished level at B2 or above is your goal and you want the exact total for your own number of weeks, run your dates through the course total calculator at the top of our prices page.

This hours table is about building the language level itself, through our Intensive group course or private one-to-one lessons. It is a different block of hours from exam-specific preparation, covered next, which assumes you are already close to the level and need exam technique rather than more grammar.

What does DELE B2 or C1 preparation cost in Málaga?

Once you are actually at or near the target level, exam-specific preparation is a shorter, more focused block than the hours table above. Our DELE and SIELE exam preparation and our prices page list the same options for B2 and C1:

Format Hours Price
Intensive 40 hours over 4 weeks €560
Semester 60 hours across the semester €810
Private, one-to-one 1 to 50 hours, by pack €35 an hour, down to €24 an hour on a 50-hour pack

For C1 specifically, we recommend private preparation over the structured courses. The C1 exam has moved to integrated skills, so the bottleneck sits in a different place for each candidate, one person struggles turning a lecture into writing, another struggles arguing live about a text they just read, and a private hour can go straight at that exact point instead of spreading evenly across skills you may not need equally. For B2, the Intensive or Semester course is a sound route at a lower price per hour, since its fixed block of exam practice covers four separate tests with a familiar structure. Either way, the exam fee itself (€204 for B2, €225 for C1 at the UMA centre in 2027) is paid separately when you register, never included in our preparation price.

DELE or SIELE: does the certificate type matter for university or jobs?

Each university decides which certificates it accepts, and the UMA master’s example above explicitly accepts either one. Where they genuinely differ is speed and what stands behind them. DELE is a diploma from Spain’s Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, valid indefinitely, with results in about three months. SIELE is backed by the Instituto Cervantes together with UNAM, the University of Salamanca and the University of Buenos Aires, valid for five years, with results in up to three weeks, a real advantage if your deadline for a university application or a job offer is close.

If you are not sure which one your specific situation calls for, our free DELE or SIELE guide lays out the full comparison in plain language, and our dedicated SIELE exam guide covers that exam’s own format and scoring in detail.

When can you sit DELE B2 or C1 in Málaga, and how do you register?

At the Centro Internacional de Español, the University of Málaga’s own exam centre, DELE B1 through C2 runs twice in the 2027 calendar:

Exam date Levels at the UMA centre Registration opens Registration closes
Saturday 22 May 2027 B1, B2, C1, C2 18 November 2026 7 April 2027
Saturday 13 November 2027 B1, B2, C1, C2 18 November 2026 29 September 2027

The centre’s February, April and October 2027 sessions are A2 only, so they do not apply if you are sitting B2 or C1. On fees, the UMA centre’s 2027 list gives €204 for B2 and €225 for C1, both still pending confirmation by the Instituto Cervantes, so treat them as a guide rather than a locked price until the centre confirms. SIELE has no fixed calendar at all: you book your date directly at siele.org, at the UMA centre or any other authorised one, whenever suits you.

Registration for DELE always goes through the Instituto Cervantes system and your chosen centre, never through us. Once you book a course or private hours with us, we help with every step of that registration at no extra charge.

Are you already at B2, or do you need to build the level first?

Everything above assumes you already know roughly where you stand. If you do not, the free Málaga level test answers that in a few minutes, and before your classes start our academic director checks it with a written test and an oral interview. Booking C1 preparation when you are actually at B1 wastes both your money and your weeks; the honest move in that case is to build the level first on our Intensive course, not to force exam technique onto a gap that technique cannot close.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between DELE B2 and DELE C1?

B2 tests four separate skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking. C1 keeps four tests but makes two of them integrated, turning listening into writing and reading into live spoken argument, and expects academic or professional register rather than everyday Spanish.

What Spanish level do you need for university in Spain?

It depends entirely on the university and the specific programme; there is no single national rule. As one documented example, the University of Málaga’s MBA master’s programme asks non-Spanish-speaking applicants for B2, proven by DELE or SIELE. Always check the exact wording on the programme you are applying to.

Is DELE B2 enough to work in Spain?

It depends on the role and, for regulated professions, on the law behind it. Homologating a foreign nursing degree in Spain requires Spanish at B2, with exceptions such as nationals of Spanish-speaking countries. For other professions and for most private-sector jobs, check the specific employer or regulator rather than assuming one level applies everywhere.

Do Spanish universities accept SIELE instead of DELE?

Some do. The UMA MBA example above names both DELE and SIELE as accepted proof of B2. Confirm with the specific programme, since acceptance is set by each university and sometimes by each degree.

How many hours does it take to go from B2 to C1?

In our course plan, B2 and C1 are each 120 hours of class, so moving from a finished B2 to a finished C1 is another 120 hours, 6 weeks at Intensive pace (20 hours a week) or about 12 weeks at 10 private hours a week.

Can you skip B2 and prepare directly for C1?

Only if you are already genuinely close to C1. Our course plan builds each level on the last, and jumping exam-specific preparation onto a real B2-level gap does not work; the free level test tells you honestly where you stand before you book either one.

How much does DELE B2 or C1 preparation cost, including the exam fee?

Our preparation is €560 for the 40-hour Intensive course, €810 for the 60-hour Semester course, or private hours from €35 down to €24 an hour. The exam fee is separate: €204 for B2 and €225 for C1 at the UMA centre in 2027, both pending confirmation by the Instituto Cervantes.

Which level should you choose if you are not sure what is required?

Ask the specific institution or employer in writing, since “advanced” or “fluent” in a job advert or an admission page can mean either level. If no one can tell you, C1 is the safer choice for anything academic, legal or senior client-facing, while B2 is often workable for general office and everyday working use.

Ready to choose your level and your date?

Match the real requirement, a university programme’s own wording, your profession’s homologation rule, or a specific employer’s answer, to one of the two levels above, then build your preparation backwards from the 22 May or 13 November 2027 sitting, or from SIELE’s on-demand booking.
