Which Business Spanish Certificate Do Employers Actually Notice?

Quick answer

There is no single best business Spanish certificate. The DELE is the Instituto Cervantes' official general Spanish diploma, issued for Spain's Ministry of Education, while the Madrid Chamber of Commerce certificate (B2, C1, C2) tests business Spanish specifically, which suits commercial and administrative roles. Ask your own employer which one they expect before you choose.

What is the DELE, and who recognises it?

The DELE, Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera, is the general Spanish diploma issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education. It comes in six separate levels, A1 to C2, each a standalone diploma rather than a step in one long exam, and each diploma is valid for life once you pass it. Exam dates are fixed across the year and vary by centre, so you register for a specific sitting rather than booking it on demand.

Because the Ministry of Education stands behind it, the DELE is the certificate Spanish nationality applications ask for (at A2), and the usual answer when a university or a general job advert asks for “a Spanish language certificate”. It does not test business language specifically: a DELE B2 tells an employer you can handle complex general Spanish, not that you know how to negotiate a contract or write a formal business report, even though our own curriculum teaches exactly those business skills at that level.

What is the Madrid Chamber of Commerce business Spanish certificate?

The Español de los Negocios certificate is run by the Cámara de Comercio de Madrid, which works with more than 200 institutions worldwide, and it tests business Spanish directly rather than general language skills. It is offered at three levels mapped to the CEFR: the Certificado Básico (B2), the Certificado Superior (C1) and the Diploma (C2). Each exam takes about three hours and tests both oral and written expression with the technical language of business, and the Chamber says the exams can be taken online. The Chamber also runs separate exams in Spanish for tourism (B2, C1), for health sciences and for academic Spanish, so check you are registering for the business one.

This certificate exists because general Spanish diplomas do not prove business Spanish on their own. If your job is specifically about commercial correspondence, negotiation or administration in Spanish, this is the certificate built to show that. When we checked on 28 October 2026, the Chamber’s page listed the next dates and fees as pending, with details in each exam’s brochure, so confirm both before you plan your preparation around a sitting.

DELE or the Chamber of Commerce certificate: how do they actually differ?

DELE Chamber of Commerce certificate
Issued by Instituto Cervantes, for Spain’s Ministry of Education Cámara de Comercio de Madrid
Levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 B2 (Básico), C1 (Superior), C2 (Diploma)
Tests General Spanish, four skills Business Spanish, oral and written
Length 120 to 305 minutes, by level About 3 hours
Validity Lifetime Check with the issuing centre
Known for Nationality, university, general employment Commercial and administrative business Spanish

The practical difference is what each exam is designed to prove. The DELE proves your general Spanish at a CEFR level, full stop, and nothing about it is specific to a company or a sector. The Chamber of Commerce certificate proves you can read a commercial contract, write a formal business letter or follow a negotiation in Spanish, and nothing about it tells a university or an immigration office your general level the way a DELE does. Neither replaces the other; they answer different questions.

Which one do employers actually notice?

Here is the honest, reasoned answer, not a statistic: it depends on what the job actually asks for, and we cannot promise what any single employer already recognises. Two rules of thumb help before you spend money and study hours on the wrong exam.

First, when a job posting or an HR department simply asks for “a Spanish language certificate” without naming one, the DELE is the safest match, because it is the official diploma issued on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education and it states a CEFR level any recruiter can read. If you are not sure what your employer means by “certified Spanish”, the DELE is the safer general-purpose answer, and a DELE B2 or C1 also keeps your options open for other uses (a Spanish university course, a longer stay, a different employer later) that the Chamber of Commerce certificate does not cover.

Second, when the role is specifically commercial, administrative or client-facing in Spanish, naming the Cámara de Comercio de Madrid certificate on your CV signals something a general DELE does not: that you were tested on the technical language of business, not just general fluency. Either way, an interview or a trial period in Spanish will test you again, so treat both certificates as evidence that opens the conversation, not as a guarantee of the job.

If you are still unsure, ask the employer directly which certificate they expect, or bring both options to your teacher here and we will help you weigh the two against your actual CV and sector.

Do you need either certificate at all, or do the hours matter more?

We already answered the hours question honestly in How Long Does It Take to Learn Business Spanish?, where we promised to come back to the certificate question separately, and this post is that answer. You do not need to sit either exam to take our business Spanish classes in Málaga: the one-to-one packs end with a Vamos Academy certificate recording your hours and your progress against the CEFR descriptors. A certificate from us is proof of training, not an official diploma, so check with your own HR whether that is sufficient before you assume you need DELE or Chamber of Commerce paperwork on top.

If your situation does call for an official exam, either because a job, a visa or a specific HR policy names one, our DELE and SIELE exam preparation in Málaga covers the DELE one-to-one at €35 an hour, no enrolment fee, and the same teachers prepare you for the Chamber of Commerce exam tasks, which also appear inside the business curriculum’s final block for B2 and C1 students. If you are choosing between the DELE and SIELE specifically (not the Chamber of Commerce route), our separate guide, DELE or SIELE: which one?, covers that comparison in full.

How do you prepare for either exam in Málaga?

Preparation works the same way regardless of which certificate you are aiming for: a free level test to confirm where you stand, then one-to-one hours built around the exact exam, not a generic course. For the DELE, your teacher drills the four skills, reading, listening, writing and speaking, the exact way the exam tests them, with mock exams under timed conditions. For the Chamber of Commerce certificate, preparation leans on the same business Spanish curriculum that teaches negotiation, reports and formal correspondence, since that is precisely what the exam checks.

Both routes are priced the same way, €35 an hour with no enrolment fee and materials included, and you can combine either with general group classes if your level is not yet high enough: the Chamber of Commerce certificate starts at B2, and DELE B2 or C1 coaching only makes sense once your general Spanish is close to that level. Our Málaga prices page also lists the 40-hour (€560) and 60-hour (€810) DELE preparation courses if you want a longer fixed plan, and you can ask your teacher honestly whether you are ready to book an exam date yet or need general hours first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the DELE exam and who recognises it?

The DELE is the Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera, issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education. It has six levels, A1 to C2, each a standalone lifetime diploma, and it is the certificate nationality applications ask for (at A2) and the usual answer when a university or employer asks for “a Spanish certificate”.

What is the Cámara de Comercio de Madrid business Spanish certificate?

It is the Español de los Negocios certificate of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce. It offers three levels, B2 (Certificado Básico), C1 (Certificado Superior) and C2 (Diploma), and tests business Spanish specifically: oral and written expression with the technical language of business, in an exam of about three hours.

Which is better for a job application, the DELE or the Chamber of Commerce certificate?

It depends on what the job asks for, and we cannot promise what any specific employer notices. If the job or HR simply asks for a Spanish certificate, the DELE is the safer general choice because it is an official diploma issued for Spain’s Ministry of Education and states a CEFR level any recruiter can read. If the role is specifically commercial or administrative, naming the Chamber of Commerce certificate can signal business Spanish more directly.

Do I need B2 Spanish before I can sit either exam?

For the Chamber of Commerce certificate, yes: its lowest level is B2. For the DELE, no, you can sit any level from A1 to C2 depending on where you already are. Our business Spanish course starts at A2, and its exam practice (the final block) is for B2 and C1 students; our DELE preparation covers every level.

Can I take the Chamber of Commerce business Spanish exam online?

Yes, the Cámara de Comercio de Madrid says its Spanish certificate exams can be taken online, as well as at partner universities and centres. Confirm the exact arrangement, dates and fee with the exam centre when you register, since they are set per sitting.

How much does exam preparation cost in Málaga?

Our one-to-one exam preparation for either the DELE or the Chamber of Commerce exam is €35 an hour, with no enrolment fee and materials included. You book the hours you need rather than a fixed package, and a free level test at the start confirms where to start.

Is a Vamos Academy certificate the same as the DELE or the Chamber of Commerce diploma?

No. Every one-to-one business pack ends with a Vamos Academy certificate recording your hours and your progress against the CEFR descriptors, which is proof of training, not an official government or Chamber of Commerce diploma. Ask your employer whether that is enough before you assume you need to sit an official exam as well.

Where do I register for the DELE or the Chamber of Commerce exam?

The DELE is registered through the Instituto Cervantes network of exam centres, with fixed dates that vary by centre. The Chamber of Commerce business Spanish certificate is registered through its partner universities and centres, or taken online. We help you prepare for both in Málaga, but official registration and the exam fee are handled separately from our classes.
