Quick answer
DELE is the most widely recognised Spanish certificate and never expires, which makes it the choice for Spanish nationality and universities. SIELE is adaptive, cannot be failed, returns a score in about three weeks and lasts five years. CELU is the Argentine certificate. Check which one the institution asking actually accepts before booking.
There are four recognised Spanish certificates and they are not interchangeable. Choosing wrong costs you an exam fee and several months. This guide compares DELE, SIELE, CELU and the OPI on what actually differs: who accepts them, whether they expire, and how long they take.

Which Spanish certification should you take?
| DELE | SIELE | CELU | OPI | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Issued by | Instituto Cervantes, on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education | Instituto Cervantes with three universities | Argentine universities | ACTFL, United States |
| Format | Level-specific exam, you pick A1 to C2 | Single adaptive exam, gives you a score | Single exam, gives a band | Speaking only, by phone or video |
| Result | Pass or fail at that level | Score mapped to CEFR | Intermediate, advanced or superior | ACTFL rating |
| Validity | Does not expire | Five years | Does not expire | Varies by employer |
| Turnaround | Around two to three months | Around three weeks | Around two months | Fast, often days |
| Spanish variety | Accepts all, Peninsular framing | Accepts all varieties explicitly | Rioplatense | Accepts all |
| Best for | Spanish citizenship, permanent proof, universities in Spain | Speed, employers, a snapshot of your level | Study or work in Argentina | US employers and government roles |
Check with whoever is asking before you book anything. An employer or university usually names the certificate they accept, and that single answer removes the decision entirely.
What is the DELE exam?
The Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera, issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. It is the most widely recognised Spanish certificate internationally and the one most people mean when they say “Spanish exam”.
Two features matter. It never expires, which makes it the right choice if you want permanent proof. And you sit a specific level, from A1 to C2, which means you either pass that level or you do not. There is no fallback to a lower result.

See our Málaga schoolHow is SIELE different from DELE?
SIELE is adaptive and produces a score rather than a pass or fail. You cannot fail it; you simply get placed. It is delivered by computer, results arrive in around three weeks rather than months, and it is valid for five years.
The practical split: DELE if you need permanent, official proof, particularly for Spanish nationality or a university in Spain. SIELE if you need a fast, current measure for an employer, or if you genuinely do not know your level and do not want to gamble on picking one.
What is CELU, and why does nobody mention it?
The Certificado de Español Lengua y Uso, issued by a consortium of Argentine universities and officially recognised by Argentina’s Ministry of Education. It is the standard certificate for studying or working in Argentina.
It is barely covered in English-language guides, which are written from a Spain-centric view. If your plans involve Argentina, it is often the more relevant qualification, and it assesses use of the language rather than isolated grammar knowledge.
Which DELE level should you take?
| Level | Roughly what you can do | Typically taken for |
|---|---|---|
| A1 to A2 | Basic phrases, everyday transactions | Personal milestone. A2 is the level required for Spanish nationality. |
| B1 | Handle travel, describe experiences, give opinions | General proof of competence |
| B2 | Fluent conversation without strain on either side | The usual minimum for university study and most employers |
| C1 | Flexible professional and academic use | Postgraduate study, professional roles |
| C2 | Near-complete comprehension and precise expression | Teaching, translation, academia |
Because DELE is pass or fail at a chosen level, sit the one you can pass rather than the one you would like to hold. A B2 in hand beats a failed C1.
How long should you prepare?
Assuming you are already at roughly the right level, most candidates need eight to twelve weeks of focused preparation. That time goes on exam technique rather than Spanish: timing, task types, the structure of the written pieces and what examiners are listening for in the oral.
If you are half a level short, preparation will not close the gap. That requires teaching, and the honest timeline is months rather than weeks.

Where do you sit the exams?
DELE runs on fixed dates each year at approved centres worldwide, and registration closes weeks in advance, so check dates before planning anything around it. SIELE is on demand at authorised centres and partly online. CELU has a small number of sittings a year in Argentina and abroad.
We run DELE preparation at our school in Málaga and can prepare you for CELU in Buenos Aires. If you are unsure which level to enter, take the free level test first, because entering the wrong level is the most expensive mistake available here.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most recognised Spanish certificate?
DELE, issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education. It has the widest international recognition and does not expire, which is why it is the default choice for immigration and university applications.
Does the DELE expire?
No. A DELE diploma is valid indefinitely. SIELE, by contrast, is valid for five years, which is worth knowing if you need proof that will still count in a decade.
Which Spanish exam is easiest?
SIELE is the least risky rather than the easiest, because it is adaptive and cannot be failed: you receive a score reflecting your level. DELE at a level well within your ability is straightforward; DELE at a level above you is not.
Do I need a Spanish certificate to work in Spain?
Not usually for the job itself, though employers may ask for evidence. You do need A2 DELE, or the equivalent CCSE and DELE combination, for Spanish nationality, and universities generally require B2 or C1 for degree programmes taught in Spanish.
