¿Alguna vez te has detenido a pensar, cuál es la forma correcta que debés usar para referirte a “esto” o “aquello”en inglés? Los términos son This, That, These y Those.
En inglés, se utiliza “this” (singular) y “these” (plural) cuando el objeto al que te querés referir está cerca de vos.
Algunos ejemplos en singular serían:
- This is my favorite jacket.
- Esta es mi campera preferida.
- This is a croissant.
- Esto es una medialuna.
En plural:
- These boys really enjoy talking nonsense.
- Estos chicos realmente disfrutan hablando tonterías.
- These paintings are very lovely.
- Estas obras de arte son muy lindas.
Ahora, cuando estos objetos se encuentran lejos de nosotros, nos referimos a ellos con “that” (singular) o “those” (plural). Así:
Ejemplos en singular:
- That used to be my home.
- Ese solía ser mi hogar.
- That is a very poisonous flower.
- Esa es una flor muy venenosa.
Ejemplos en plural:
- Those prices were way too high.
- Esos precios estaban demasiado altos.
- Those aremy sister’s white t-shirts.
- Esas son las remeras blancas de mi hermana.

This, that, these, those como determinantes
Un determinante es una palabra que aparece antes de un sustantivo. Algunos ejemplos de determinantes son some (algún/os), my (mi), this (esto, esta), that (eso, esa), these (éstos, éstas), those (esos, esas), etc.)
En inglés, se usa “this” y “that” con sustantivos singulares e incontables:
- Please, take this kitten back home.
- Por favor, devolvé este gato a casa.
- This song makes me wanna dance nonstop.
- Esta canción me hace querer bailar sin parar.
- Aunt Alice said not to recommend that book .
- La tía Alice dijo que no recomendaramos ese libro.
- That chicken is definitely raw. No doubt.
- Ese pollo está crudo. Sin duda.
“These” and “those“, por otro lado, se utilizan únicamente con sustantivos en plural:
- These kids are adorable.
- Estos niños son encantadores.
- Check these candles over here and those over there.
- Mirá estas velas que están aquí y mirá esas allá.
- I miss you and those annoying morning sounds.
- Te extraño a vos y esos molestos sonidos matutinos.
