History of La Boca and El Caminito, Buenos Aires

La Boca, a neighborhood located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has a fascinating history that dates back to the mid-19th century. This vibrant area first thrived due to its proximity to the La Boca harbor and the influx of immigrants from Spain and Italy. These immigrants, who arrived with little wealth, found work in the harbor and brought with them their unique cultures, which ultimately shaped the character of La Boca.

Over the years, La Boca has gone through periods of neglect and revitalization. Today, it is known as a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. One of the main attractions in La Boca is El Caminito, a colorful street filled with vibrant houses made from industrial materials. The bright and cheerful facades of these buildings add to the charm and uniqueness of the neighborhood.

However, as the harbor moved and industrialization took hold, La Boca faced a period of decline. It was during this time that the iconic colorful houses of El Caminito emerged, as residents used leftover paint from the shipyard to brighten up their homes.

In the 1950s, La Boca went through a period of revitalization, with artists and musicians flocking to the area. The Tango, a dance form synonymous with Buenos Aires, found its roots in La Boca. Today, the neighborhood continues to evolve, attracting tourists with its unique blend of history, culture, and artistic expression.

How to Get to Caminito La Boca

It got to Friday afternoon and 18 of us all assembled in the hall ready to embark on our adventure. I felt like I had been transported back to my school days, before a school trip, with all of us gathered ready and waiting. We left school and all piled into the 152 bus straight to La Boca. The bus journey was not a short one, we’d left an hour to get there but heavy traffic meant we were seriously late to meet our guide. The bus emptied along our journey and in the end it was literally the 18 of us students left. The bus driver pulled up to a deserted street next to the river and called out to us that it was our turn to leave. We had arrived.
