Big city life is great. There’s never a lack of cultural activities to sink my teeth into. I could have plans every night of the week, spend every weekend exploring, and still have things left to find, experience, see, and do. But sometimes city life can be exhausting. Some days I long for the outdoors, a respite from the hustle and bustle, an escape from the concrete jungle. The great thing about Buenos Aires is there are a multitude of day trips to be taken, or longer journeys to beautiful natural landscapes where you can bask in the glory of the great outdoors.
But for me, I don’t often have the time or money to plan a longer voyage and at times I don’t have the energy to navigate my way to the closer destinations. [Call me lazy if you will] For these reasons I am happy to have discovered the magic that is the Reserva Ecológica Constanera Sur, an eco reserve right here within the confines of our very own Capital Federal. Better yet, entrance to the reserve is F-R-E-E.
Located on the river on the south side of the city and occupying 353 hectares of green protected land, it’s hard to believe you’re still within the city limits. Though I could see the towering buildings of Puerto Madero looming in the distance, my search for respite and nature had been realized.
Take a book. Take your friends. Pack a picnic. Drink some mate. Climb a tree. Dip your feet in the water. Watch the animals. Smell the flowers. Bask in the goodness of the outdoors. The day is yours.
The reserve is huge and there is much to explore. If you like to travel on two wheels, rent a bike and check out the reserve in style, following the winding paths through the diverse landscapes. If you’re not into biking, check it out on foot. It’s just as cool. And after you’ve worked up an appetite exploring the great outdoors, the sidewalk bordering the reserve is full of sidewalk parrillas to fill you up with choripan and other delectable Argentine favorites. And if you’ve got a sweet tooth to feed, check out the small market across the street where you can find dulce de leche stuffed coconut cake.
