Archives for July 2013

Life in Argentina can be phenomenal if you know where to look and find what you need. There is more to Argentina than memories of the musical Evita as any tourist can tell you after even one visit.

If you like archaeology and get a kick out of knowing about our pre-historic ancestors first hand, then a guided tour at Estancia La Maria may be your speed. You can go through the 84 caves and marvel at how well-preserved the rock paintings are even though they were made thousands of years ago. The caves are in Patagonia so you may want to bring along a packed lunch if you intend to visit (it takes a lot of walking to visit 84 caves).

In Buenos Aires you can visit a series of underground tunnels that were reconstructed to their former glory at the El Zanjon de Granados. The maze which is believed to have been built in 1730 also has sewers and water wells at various points. You can rely on hour-long guided tours on weekdays or take the half-hour guided tour on Sunday as you prefer – but be sure to advise the staff in advance if you need English-speaking guides for your tour.

Of course, Argentina like other South American countries is known for its great cuisine. Be prepared for dishes that are based heavily on Argentine beef. You can get grilled steak and ribs if you want to play it safe but don’t leave out the morcilla (blood sausage) which is a local specialty. If you have been walking for hours and want something light to tide you over, the empanadas should fit the bill nicely. You might be surprised to know that Italian culture has heavily influenced Argentine cuisine so you may see Italian influences even in local favorites like Argentine pizza. If you need a hearty meal after a day of roaming Argentina then you can look for restaurants offering pasta dishes like ravioli, gnocchi, and fettuccine to fill you up.

Argentina also produces fine wine and these wines can hold their own among the best in mendozathe world. Because of the greater need for quality wine, Argentine vintners slowed down production to try to come up with better quality wines. In the past Argentine wine was dominated by the Criolla Grande, Criolla Chica, and Cereza wine varieties – nowadays red grape wine such as Malbec is the top wine being produced. The Syrah variety is usually found in the San Juan region and more and more land is being put under cultivation of the Syrah grape. You can still find old wine varieties in the Uco Valley area in southwest Mendoza too.

Once you visit Argentina you may never want to leave because there are really so many things to try out and enjoy while you are here. But for those who want to continue their travel to the United States, one might need a visa. The visa will enable passport holders to travel to United States for either business or tourism. Individuals eligible for VWP must first obtain an authorization through ESTA and meet the essential eligibility necessities before the travel. Argentina remains to be among the top tourist attractions in the world and it’s definitely a place worth a visit.

By looking at the date July 20 might not ring a bell right away that it was the day that men had landed on the moon for the very first time in 1969. It was because of this historical mankind achievement that caused Dr. Enrique Ernesto Febbraro, a psychology/philosophy/history professor from Argentina, to realize that we are all united and have all been brought together by this very special event; thus, created El Día del Amigo (Friend’s Day). Soon after, it was also officially recognized by the government, and July 20 has been the day to celebrate friendship in Argentina ever since.

While el Día del Amigo is not a public holiday, Argentines do really care about it and take this opportunity to get together with friends. You’ll see many restaurants, bars and clubs offer special promotions that are tailored to groups. Also, since a few years ago when pretty much everyone started to have a cellphone, it is not uncommon for the cellphone network in major cities, including Buenos Aires, to collapse on this very day because of the heavy usage for greetings among friends. According to the phone companies, the traffic is highly comparable to those during Christmas day and New Year’s Eve.

Tomorrow, Saturday July 20, will be the 2013 Día del Amigo in Argentina. If you haven’t made plans with your friends yet, better pick up the phone now, otherwise, you may not be able to get connected at all tomorrow!

Vamos Spanish wishes you Feliz Día del Amigo!

One thing that isn’t readily apparent on a world map is just how big Argentina really is and how long it takes to get from one end to the other. So unless you have a lot of time on your hands, it can be hard to see all of Argentina, from north to south and from east to west. But if you want to “visit” all of Argentina in one day, then be sure to check out Caminos y Sabores this weekend. This fair is held every year in Buenos Aires (since 2005), and is a celebration of all of the different foods and cultural traditions from all over Argentina.

When it first started, there were only about 100 booths, but it was the first event of its kind in Buenos Aires: it had typical foods, crafts, and tourist attractions from every region, all under the same roof. There are 9 caminos temáticos (thematic pathways): Cheese, Meat, Tradition, Tourism, Oil and Spices, Drinks, Yerba Mate and Tea, Fruits of the Earth (berries, nuts, jams, etc.), and Sweets.

Today, this event has well over 400 booths, 2,000 products, 80,000 visitors each year, and all 23 provinces are represented. This year it will be held from Saturday July 6 – Tuesday July 9 from 12pm-9pm each day. Tickets are AR$50 (children under 3 years old are free) and can be purchased at the venue, La Rural (Av. Sarmiento 2704).

This event not only has samples, but it also includes cooking demonstrations by chefs classes-at-caminos-y-sabores-food-fair-buenos-aireswho specialize in typical foods from different parts of Argentina and Latin America. There will also be a taste-testing competition, where amateur food-testers will try to describe the characteristics (both the good and the bad) of different products, in hopes of improving the production. Check their schedule here for more details as the cooking demonstrations, special workshops about regional foods, and live music venues will change every day. While food is a big focus (yay!), there will also be many handmade crafts that are typical of each region (a great souvenir opportunity if ever there was one!)

With Independence Day just around the corner (Tuesday July 9!), there’s never been a better time to taste your way around and celebrate Argentina!
