Tips On Wine Drinking, Buying and Tasting in Buenos Aires

When people visit Buenos Aires they primarily think of steaks, gauchos (Argentine cowboys) and football, but not too aware of an important aspect – WINE.

Argentina is actually the sixth largest wine country in the world and produces annually about 15 million hectoliters of wine, so you can imagine the range of Argentine wines is really big. It’s quite unthinkable if you come to Argentina and not try the local wine. If you are short on time and cannot make a trip out to the wine regions (like Mendoza), then let them come to you in Buenos Aires!!!

As I personally know it can be very difficult (not because there are no places, noo – but because there are so many of them) to find nice places to buy or to taste good wines in Buenos Aires so I have come up with a small list (by personal experience) which should help you find suitable locations.

A) Places to drink wine
Here are some of the places I have visited in the past but it is well worth asking around for new recommendations too.

1. “La Bodega” of the Gran Bar Danzon – Libertad 1161
At this unique place you can enjoy different Argentine Wines. You just need to tell the sommelier what you would like to have and how much you would like to spend and he will offer you recommendations on different wines.

2. Duhau Restaurante & Vinoteca de Palacio – Alvear Avenida 1661
The Vinoteca de Palacio is the vinoteca of the Park Hyatt Hotel in Buenos Aires. You can find excellent National as well as International wines there. To accompany your wine they also offer a variety of different cheeses. Reservation required.

3. Aldo’s – Moreno 372
It is a beautiful little restaurant with a big wine list. The wine is served from a professional Sommelier who knows everything about each bottle they offer.

4. Las Nazarenas – Reconquista 1132
Their Rincón de Vino (wine corner) is my favourite place in Buenos Aires to have a nice bottle of wine with friends or your girl/boyfriend in a pretty atmosphere and a really really big wine list. It is also a famous parrilla (steakhouse), so you can also have a great steak meal there with your wine. My recommendation – MALBEC Finca la Linda.

B) Places to buy wine
Of course you can buy all sorts of wine in every regular supermarket or every “chino” (that’s the name of smaller supermarkets run by chinese families) in your neighborhood, but if you like to hava a little bit more personal and expertise advice, here I recommend some nice places to buy your wine:

1. Winery – Various locations
2. Ligier – Various locations
3. 0800 Vino – Anchorena 695 (you can buy your wine online as well)
4. There are many small wine shops/”vinotecas” spread all over the city and of course it is totally worth it to have a look inside. The owners of these little shops are very friendly and if you are lucky you may even get a private wine tasting.

C) Wine Tastings
There are many agencies and companies who offer wine tours and wine tastings all around the city. So far, I’ve joined 2 different ones and I was thrilled of them.

1. Anuva Wine Tasting – A tasting of different Argentine wines paired with tapas makes this tasting session a culinary highlight.

2. Wine Tour Urbano – This is not the typical wine tasting where you sit and sip. This ‘tour’ starts at a specific location (it changes every season) and they have different winery/representatives set up tables at various points around that area. You pay a flat fee, get your wine glass and a map, then off you go and taste wine at your own pace.

Since the subject of wine in Buenos Aires is a very complex one, you should always keep your ears and eyes open to discover new ones.

¡Salud!

Ben
